How We Measure Your Vitamin D Levels

We use a specialised test to measure something called 25-hydroxyvitamin D (you can think of it as the active form of Vitamin D) in your blood. This is like taking a snapshot of your body's Vitamin D status, which is super important for keeping your bones strong and supporting your overall health.

  • 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D): Imagine 25(OH)D as the main player in the Vitamin D story. When we test for this, we get a clear picture of how much Vitamin D your body is using and whether it's enough to keep you healthy.

Much like knowing the correct tyre pressure keeps your car running smoothly and efficiently, understanding and maintaining the right Vitamin D levels ensures your body functions properly, supporting everything from bone health to immune function.

Understanding Your Vitamin DTest Results

When you receive your Vitamin D test results, they will be given in two measurements: nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) and nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL). Here's a simple explanation of what these numbers mean for your health:
Vitamin D Level (nmol/L)Vitamin D Level (ng/mL)What It Means for Your Health
Vitamin D Level (nmol/L)
Vitamin D Level (ng/mL)
What It Means for Your Health
Less than 50 nmol/L
Less than 20 ng/mL
Deficient:Deficient: Indicates a severe lack of Vitamin D, which may lead to bone weakness, fatigue, and compromised immunity. Requires immediate supplementation and dietary changes. Retest after 3 months of supplementation.
50 to 75 nmol/L
20 to 30 ng/mL
Insufficient:Insufficient: Indicates suboptimal Vitamin D levels, which may cause mild fatigue and low bone density over time. Consider moderate supplementation, increased sun exposure, and dietary adjustments. Retest in 6 months.
More than 75 nmol/L
More than 30 ng/mL
Sufficient:Sufficient: Indicates healthy Vitamin D levels, supporting strong bones and a robust immune system. Maintain with a balanced diet and regular sun exposure. Retest annually to monitor levels.
When to Retest:In some cases, especially if you're addressing a deficiency, we may recommend a follow-up test to ensure your Vitamin D levels have improved and stabilised. This allows us to fine-tune our recommendations and ensure your health is on the right track.
